U.S. stocks have been rather volatile in the past month, but in the past week they had a strong run on hopes of rate cuts. Tech stocks, which would be boosted by rate cuts, have been a big part of that rally — with Meta , Alphabet and Amazon in particular having a strong showing over the past couple of weeks. Elsewhere, analysts are getting more optimistic on China stocks, especially those in the tech sector. Kevin Liu, managing director and strategist at CICC Research, said his conviction call would be a structural barbell allocation with themes including tech names "with high-end upgrading opportunities," among others. Stock screen Against this backdrop, CNBC Pro screened FactSet for stocks from four exchange-traded funds (KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF, Vanguard Information Technology ETF, Invesco China Technology ETF and the iShares MSCI China Multisector Tech ETF) to find stocks that: have beaten the S & P 500's around 9% year-to-date performance.

When you invest in an index fund, you're essentially buying a basket of stocks that represents a broad market or theme. "That book makes a really good case for index funds." They own the Vanguard 500 Index Fund Admiral Shares Fund (VFIAX), the Vanguard Information Technology Index Fund ETF (ETF, VGT), and the Fidelity MSCI Information Technology Index ETF (ETF, FTEC). Note that ETFs, like index funds, offer an easy way to diversify and bundle several securities into one investment. Since index funds are passively managed, they typically have lower costs than actively managed funds — and, historically, they outperform active funds.

Private payrolls increased at a faster than expected pace in April, indicating there are still plenty of tailwinds for the U.S. labor market, according to ADP. Companies with 500 or more workers showed the biggest gain in hiring with 98,000. In recent months, ADP has consistently undershot the Labor Department's count, though the numbers were fairly close in March. The department's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that private payrolls increased by 232,000 for the month versus ADP's 208,000. Friday's report is expected to show growth of 204,000 in total nonfarm payrolls for April, down from March's 303,000, according to the consensus Dow Jones estimate.

UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty on Wednesday told lawmakers that data from an estimated one-third of Americans could have been compromised in the cyberattack on its subsidiary Change Healthcare, and that the company paid a $22 million ransom to hackers. Witty testified in front of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, which falls under the House of Representatives' Committee on Energy and Commerce. UnitedHealth has previously said the cyberattack likely impacts a "substantial proportion of people in America," according to an April release. UnitedHealth disclosed that a cyberthreat actor breached part of Change Healthcare's information technology network late in February. Witty told both committees Wednesday that UnitedHealth now has MFA in place across all external-facing systems.

Within weeks, the two-year-old US Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is set to run out of funds, and Congress appears unlikely to authorize more. Even as many older and rural Americans may be thrust into financial hardship due to the ACP’s collapse, indigenous communities could fare even worse. Because tribal members can now work remotely, they are no longer forced to move away from their communities to seek opportunity, they told CNN. For example, Mitchell said, after decades of decline in Mohawk fluency, a growing number of tribal members are now involved in online language immersion. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig) Seth Wenig/AP/FileInstead, some say, the collapse of the ACP will become another stain on the US government’s centuries-long track record of breaking promises to tribal communities.

Its business unit Optum — which provides care to 103 million customers — and Change Healthcare — which touches one in three patient records — merged in 2022. Committee Chairman Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said in his opening remarks that the Change Healthcare breach serves as a "dire warning about the consequences of too-big-to-fail mega-corporations." Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., pressed Witty to share how UnitedHealth is working to ensure something like the Change Healthcare breach will not happen again.

The Information Support Force will be led by top generals from the now-defunct SSF. These functions will now be supervised at his level and not through the Strategic Support Force, which served as a middleman,” Wuthnow said. Though US intelligence officials said the balloon was part of an extensive surveillance program run by the Chinese military, Xi may not have been aware of the mission. Not only would that deal another huge blow to China’s tech ambitions, it would further deepen the divide between two digital worlds centered around the rival economic superpowers. Congress on Tuesday approved legislation that could compel ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a national ban. That leaves few options for ByteDance to secure the future of TikTok in the US, its biggest market with 170 million users. “This includes everything from who owns and operates data centers, to space-based internet satellites, to undersea cables and, of course semiconductors.”In that sense, the TikTok ban has its silver lining for Beijing.
